Artist Interview
Q:What was your first memorable
experience with art?
A: My first memorable art experience was in grade school. I always love art class and feel I had a wonderful teacher who encouraged me. Then my mother saw my interest and suggested I take some weekend classes at The Art Institute of Chicago. I did, loved it, continued with more classes during the summer and finally majored in fine art in college.
Q: Can you explain when you first knew you wanted to become an artist? Who/What turned you on to Art?
A: With all of that interest….I knew it was what I wanted to work at!
Q: What artists influenced you the most? Current Influences?
A: The two artists that have impacted me the most are Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent. Both have influenced my work as a watercolorist.
Q: What do you like most about the medium and surface you use?
A: I like watercolor because of its transparency and luminosity. I enjoy the paints ability to dry quickly.
Q: What do you want people to respond to in your work?
A: I hope that when people look at my paintings they enjoy the choice of color, subject and fluidness of the paint.
Q: Do you have a predetermined idea of what your finished work will be like, or do the ideas emerge in process?
A: I have many ideas for paintings. As I begin one I usually know where the painting is headed, but sometimes my vision changes as the painting unfolds.
Q: What are your goals for your work in the next few years?
A: The goals I have for my work is to continue to paint the wonderful landscapes of Leelanau Michigan, as well as still life's. However I would like to see my work "loosen up", and begin toward abstraction. We shall see if that happens!!!
